Early alpha

Build a colony of clay golems

Clayhearth is a colony builder you play in your browser. Gather, dig and build, make tools for your golems, grow your territory, and defend it from monsters.

No download and no sign-up. Best on a desktop browser.

This is an early alpha. Expect bugs, rough edges and changes that break things. Colonies may be reset or lost while the game is being built, so treat your progress as temporary. To keep a colony safe across browsers, copy its recovery code from the colony menu.

Starting out

You start with five golems and nothing else

There are no tools or supplies at the start. Your golems gather stones, branches and berries by hand, and you build your first workshops from what they find. The glowing seed in the middle of your camp is the only place injured golems heal.

  • A guide walks you through the first steps
  • Coal and iron lie near your start, enough for a first pick and axe
  • Time in your colony only passes while you are playing

Your golems

Workers that need fuel, not food

Golems don't eat or sleep. They run on ember, a fuel you make from fruit, berries and pine cones. What a golem does depends on what it holds: give it a pick and it mines, an axe and it cuts wood, a sword and armour and it fights.

  • Eight kinds of workshop
  • Tools and weapons in five quality levels, and they never break
  • Build more golems in the Kiln

Combat

Defend your colony

Creatures raid your colony: big Ashbacks that break through walls, fast packs of Cinderbacks, and Thornstags that charge. You command your soldiers directly, as in a real-time strategy game. Winning a fight can drop a rare golem head, which gives the golem wearing it a special ability.

  • More than 40 kinds of events, from raids to treasure caches and sinkholes
  • Group selection, control groups and formations
  • Fog of war outside your territory

Territory

Grow your territory

Your golems only work inside your borders. To get more land, send pioneers to claim it. Soldiers are the only golems that go outside.

Multiplayer

Play with others, if you both want to

Add friends by player ID and invite them, or let the game find you a partner. Your two lands join with open ground between them, and a shared threat appears. You can work together or fight each other, but anything you take has to be carried home.

Questions

Before you play

Will my colony last?

Not guaranteed. This is an early alpha: saves may be reset when the game changes, and bugs can lose progress. It's a chance to try the game early and see where it's going.

Do I need an account?

No. Your colony is tied to this browser. The colony menu has a recovery code that brings it back in another browser or on another computer. Keep it private: anyone who has it can play your colony.

What do I need to play?

A recent desktop browser (Chrome or Edge play best) and a mouse. Phones and tablets are not supported yet.

Can other players attack me while I'm away?

No. Two colonies only meet when both players ask for it, and both have to be online.

Is it free?

Yes. Nothing in the game is for sale, and nothing that gives an advantage over other players ever will be. If you want to help, you can leave a tip.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Swap player IDs (shown on the title screen and in the colony menu), add each other, and send an invite from the Collision window. A new colony needs half an hour of play before its first meeting.

Tips

Support the game

Clayhearth is free to play, but the server it runs on costs money every month. If you're enjoying it, a tip helps pay for the server and for further development.

Tips are optional and don't unlock anything. Everyone plays the same game.

Opens Streamlabs in a new tab.

Ready to try it?

It's an early alpha, so expect bugs and possible resets.
